2017 Annual General Meeting

National Zero Waste Council AGM highlights priorities

The National Zero Waste Council recently held its third annual AGM, featuring a members forum with an international guest panel and breakout discussions around the Council's strategic priorities and four working groups -- all with a goal of providing opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing and input around the work of the Council.

The guest panel, Aligning Canada's National Zero Waste Council with Global Initiatives, included Claire Kneller (WRAP UK), Julia Vol (Ellen MacArthur Foundation), Wayne Hubbard (London Waste and Recycling Board), Chris Cochran (ReFED) and Martin Charter (The Centre for Sustainable Design), who discussed ways to advance waste prevention in Canada based on global practices.

The breakout discussions -- framed around the Council's four working groups of product, design and packaging, food, construction, renovation and demolition waste, circular economy -- were hosted by the Working Group Co-Chairs and helped to inform and set priorities for 2018.

The AGM also included an update of the 2017 activities and saw the acclamation of Malcolm Brodie (Metro Vancouver) and Jim Downham (PAC) of Council Chair and Vice-Chair for 2017/2018. Following the AGM, the Council Management Board held a closed Strategic Planning Session on Charting a Path to a Self-Sustaining Organization.

Founded by Metro Vancouver in collaboration with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the National Zero Waste Council is a cross-sector leadership initiative bringing together governments, businesses, and non‐governmental organizations. The Council aims to coordinate and amplify efforts in waste prevention across Canada in order to facilitate a fundamental shift in how our country deals with waste.
