The Built Environment

Design, construction, management, and use of buildings and other structures in our cities are all part of the built environment. The construction industry brings with it significant waste generation, environmental impact, and community influence.

A change is needed in the take-make-waste linear model for construction, renovation, and demolition. Moving to a circular economy model for the built environment will result in less waste and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

A circular built environment is driven by design and material innovation; and provides social benefits, such as support for affordable housing, in addition to lower environmental impacts.
